Maahy Art

Welcome to my World of zentangles

I’m a self-taught freelance Artist from the Maldives. Growing up in the islands, nature has always been my biggest inspiration for art. I grew up doodling nautilus shells on the beach when I was a child, curious about the geometric curvatures of it. Despite my lack of knowledge about geometry, I was fascinated by it. Tiny, beautiful details in everyday occurrences slowly ignited a huge curiosity to explore patterns as a medium of art.

Over the years, my doodles have slowly evolved into complex, subtly 3-dimensional zentangle illustrations. I have introduced organic forms and multiple levels of drawing layers into my artworks over the past couple of years. I strive to polish my details as a way of escaping into the flow of drawing and meditating in the process. “Zentangling” has taught me a lot about mindfulness and the wondrous unpredictability of lines, which relates back to the micro patterns of how all life are formed. Simply put, this style of art is a way of how tiny patterns harmonize together to create shapes, forms, colours, chaos and beauty

What “craft” represents to me in my work

The aspect of craftsmanship in my illustrations is abstractly justifying the natural geometry of the subjects through hundreds of curves and lines. One of the concepts of zentangles is the elegance of limits. When you have a hundred lines creating tiny pockets for you to be creative, your mind explodes with possibilities. Every single artwork would have a different yet similar result if the patterns were switched and alternated among each layer.

What usually attracts animals as subject in my work

Mother Nature is the best form of inspiration. I’m obsessed with micro patterns and chemical phenomenon’s that most people blindly neglect even if they see it every day. The subtle veins on a dragonfly wing, the intricacy of a turtle shell, or the camouflage of a chameleon. Looking and reflecting things from a smaller to bigger perspective can be often very eye opening.

The materials and the process used to create

My artworks are mostly created using water colour, acrylic-paper, fine-liner pens and different types of coloring mediums such as ink, acrylics and copics, with subtle touches of graphite shadings. Over the years, I also mix digital artworks for various client pieces that require draftings, colour-changes and speedy output results. I study the approximate geometry of the subjects I choose, and draw hundreds of overlapping curves which abstractly mimic the anatomy of it.
